The John A. Howe Library is a branch of the Albany Public Library at 105 Schuyler Street, at the corner of Broad Street in Albany’s South End. It opened in 1929 and is named for John A. Howe, an Albany educator who started the Albany Free Library in 1893. A $5.2 million renovation restored its historic windows and refinished its original woodwork, cabinetry and benches before it reopened in 2010. Tiles around its fireplace tell the story of Rip Van Winkle.
