The New York State Museum traces its roots to 1836 and opened in its current home on July 4, 1976. That home is the Cultural Education Center, which closes off the south end of the Empire State Plaza and faces the Capitol. The New Formalism building also holds the State Library and State Archives, and the museum takes up its first four floors. Inside are the Cohoes Mastodon, a New York City subway car and a working carousel built between 1912 and 1916.
